Skin Tag Removal

Skin tag removal is a minor surgical procedure to remove small, benign skin growths. Removal of a skin tag is recommended when it is catching on clothing or jewellery, becoming irritated, or affecting your confidence.

Skin Tag

What are Skin Tags?

A skin tag is a small, soft growth that protrudes from the surface of the skin on a thin stalk. They are flesh-coloured or slightly darker, usually no bigger than a few millimetres, though some can grow larger over time. They feel soft to the touch and move freely when pressed.

Skin tags most commonly develop where skin rubs against skin or clothing, on the neck, underarms, eyelids, under the breasts, and around the groin. They are extremely common, affecting up to 60% of adults at some point in their lifetime, and become more frequent with age.

Skin tags are non-cancerous and completely harmless. However, they can become a nuisance when they catch on clothing, jewellery or a collar, causing irritation or bleeding. Many people also choose removing skin tags for cosmetic reasons, particularly when they appear on visible areas such as the face or neck.

We may recommend removal of a skin tag if it is:

  • Catching on clothing, jewellery or a collar

  • Causing irritation, soreness or bleeding

  • In a visible area and affecting your confidence

  • Growing or changing in appearance

  • Causing discomfort in areas of skin friction

  • Has features that warrant further investigation to rule out other conditions

How Does Skin Tag Removal Work?

Our skin tag removal clinic in Exeter offers fast access to appointments and a straightforward, same-day procedure under local anaesthetic, performed personally by Dr Shakman.

  • We confirm the lesions are simple fibro-epithelial polyps and not other skin conditions. As there are different types of skin tags, size, location and cause all inform the best removal approach.

  • For very small skin tags, the anaesthetic cream or injection is virtually painless. For larger tags, a tiny drop of anaesthetic numbs the base instantly.

  • Using micro-scissors or diathermy, the skin tag is removed flush with the skin surface. Removing skin tags this way ensures a clean result with minimal scarring.

  • We use pinpoint cautery to stop any minor bleeding immediately, leaving a tiny dry crust.

  • There is no wound in the traditional sense. The small crust falls off in a few days, revealing fresh, blemish-free skin.
