What is a No-Scalpel Vasectomy?

A men's vasectomy is a permanent form of male contraception. It works by cutting or sealing the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles, so that sperm can no longer reach the semen. Once confirmed successful, it provides over 99% effective, lifelong contraception without pills, condoms or implants.

A no-scalpel vasectomy, sometimes called getting the snip, is the modern approach to this procedure. Rather than making incisions with a scalpel, a specialist instrument is used to make a tiny puncture in the scrotum. The tubes are then sealed through this single small opening. There are no stitches required and the puncture seals naturally.

Compared to a traditional vasectomy, the no-scalpel technique results in significantly less discomfort, a lower risk of complications and a faster recovery. Most men return to work within 48 hours.

A vasectomy should always be considered permanent. It is not a decision to take lightly, our consultation process ensures you are fully informed before proceeding.

How Does a No-Scalpel Vasectomy Work?

At our private vasectomy clinic in Exeter, the procedure is performed personally by Dr Shakman under local anaesthetic. The consultation and procedure can take place in a single visit.

  • A relaxed discussion to confirm eligibility, talk through the permanent nature of the procedure, answer every question and complete consent. This can be done remotely or in person.

  • Performed under local anaesthetic in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. A specialist instrument creates a tiny puncture in the scrotum, no scalpel, no stitches. You are awake and comfortable throughout.

  • Most men return to work within 48 hours. Rest is recommended for the first 48 hours, with no heavy lifting or strenuous activity for one week.

  • A semen sample must be submitted at 16 weeks to confirm the procedure was successful before stopping other contraception.
