Other Lesions & Concerns

Seborrheic keratosis removal is a minor surgical procedure to remove benign, warty skin growths that develop on the surface of the skin. Seborrheic keratosis treatment is recommended when a growth is itchy, bleeding, growing, or affecting your confidence.

What Other Skin Lesions Do We Treat?

There are many types of skin lesions that can develop on the body, and not all of them are covered by the NHS. As a private dermatology and minor surgery clinic in Exeter, we see patients with a broad range of skin concerns — from undiagnosed lumps to lesions on skin that have been refused or dismissed elsewhere.

  • Ganglion Cysts: A firm, smooth lump that develops near a joint or tendon, most commonly on the wrist or hand. Ganglion cysts are entirely benign but can cause discomfort or restrict movement. Surgical excision under local anaesthetic is the most reliable removal method.

  • Dermatofibromas: Small, firm nodules that develop just beneath the skin, most commonly on the legs. They are completely harmless but can become tender or catch on clothing. Removal is straightforward under local anaesthetic.

  • Pilar Cysts: A type of cyst that develops on the scalp, often running in families. Like sebaceous cysts, they require complete capsule excision to prevent recurrence. Drainage alone is not sufficient.

  • Xanthelasma: Soft, yellowish fatty deposits that develop around the eyelids. They are harmless but can affect appearance and confidence. Surgical removal in this delicate area requires the precision of a surgeon.

  • Warts & Verrucas: Common viral skin growths caused by the HPV virus. We assess and treat warts and verrucas that have not responded to over-the-counter treatments, using surgical excision or cautery under local anaesthetic.

  • Epidermoid Cysts: Similar to sebaceous cysts, epidermoid cysts form from a build-up of keratin beneath the skin. Complete excision of the cyst wall is required to prevent recurrence.

  • Cherry Angiomas: Small, bright red benign vascular growths that develop on the skin with age. Quick and straightforward to remove using cautery under local anaesthetic.

  • Dermal Naevi: Raised, flesh-coloured moles that sit within the deeper layers of the skin. Removal is performed for cosmetic reasons or where the lesion is causing irritation.

  • Tissue Biopsy: Where a skin lesion has unusual features, a tissue biopsy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis before proceeding with treatment.

How Does an Assessment Work?

At Surgica Medical, we offer private skin lesion assessment in Exeter, performed personally by Dr Shakman. We provide fast access to appointments with honest, unhurried advice.

  • We begin with a detailed history. How long has it been there? Does it change? What worries you most?

  • Dr Shakman performs a thorough physical examination, assessing consistency, mobility and attachment to underlying structures.

  • Not everything needs surgery. We will tell you if a lesion is best left alone, or if it requires a hospital referral.

  • If we proceed, we plan the approach carefully — tailored to the specific lesion and your individual anatomy.

  • You leave with a clear plan, a fixed price, and the confidence that you are in safe hands.
