What is Upper Blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty, sometimes called an upper eyelid lift or hooded eye surgery, is a surgical procedure to remove the excess skin that accumulates on the upper eyelids over time. As skin loses elasticity with age, the upper eyelids can become heavy and hooded, giving a tired, aged appearance and in some cases obscuring peripheral vision.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty corrects this by removing the excess skin and, where necessary, a small amount of underlying fat through a carefully placed incision along the natural crease of the eyelid. The scar is hidden within the fold and becomes virtually invisible once healed.
Eyelid lift surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the UK. It is performed under local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure, most patients go home the same day and return to normal activities within 10 to 14 days.
We may recommend upper blepharoplasty if you have:
-
Heavy or hooded upper eyelids affecting your appearance
-
Excess skin resting on the upper lashes
-
A tired or aged appearance you would like to correct
-
Upper eyelid skin obscuring your peripheral vision
-
Previously considered droopy eyelid surgery or eye lift surgery

How Does Upper Blepharoplasty Work?
At Surgica Medical, we offer private upper blepharoplasty in Exeter, performed personally by Dr Shakman. We provide fast access to appointments and a straightforward, same-day procedure under local anaesthetic.
A thorough assessment of your upper eyelids, medical history and expectations. Dr Shakman will examine the degree of skin excess, assess suitability for surgery and discuss the realistic outcome.
Local anaesthetic is injected into the upper eyelids. The procedure is well tolerated and most patients require no sedation.
A precise incision is made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and fat are carefully removed to achieve a natural, refreshed result.
The incision is closed with very fine sutures, hidden within the natural eyelid fold. Sutures are typically removed at 5 to 7 days.
Swelling and bruising are common in the first week. Most patients return to work within 10 to 14 days. Final results are visible at around 6 weeks.
